East Allegheny Joins Prestigious National Education Network

East Allegheny School District is gaining national attention as it continues to reshape the student experience and contribute to a broader conversation about the future of education. Recently inducted into the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools at a national conference in Seattle, the district is now part of a select and highly regarded network of school systems across the country working together to improve student outcomes through innovation and collaboration.
For Superintendent Joseph DiLucente, the recognition affirms a transformation already underway. “It quantifies our efforts towards building a school district that is more focused on educational practices, and with that, strong educational practices that have meaning for kids,” he said.
East Allegheny joined Keystone Oaks and North Allegheny as part of a Western Pennsylvania cohort inducted together. Notably, Allegheny County now has 13 districts in the League, representing the largest regional group in the country.
That strong local presence creates a unique advantage, giving schools across the region greater opportunities to collaborate, share strategies, and improve outcomes for students in Western Pennsylvania.
A Reimagined Approach to Learning
According to Junior/Senior High School Principal R.J. Long, East Allegheny’s acceptance followed a highly selective and rigorous process that required the district to clearly demonstrate both its vision and impact.
“This wasn’t a one and done,” Long said. “We went through an interview process with the Digital Promise League of Innovative Schools.”
As part of that process, district leaders showcased the systems and strategies driving change across the district.
“Some of the things we talked about was our approach to address chronic attendance and chronic absenteeism,” Long said. “We talked about our master schedule, trauma-informed practices to support the social emotional learning needs of all of our students, and how we are re-imagining our instruction and assessment practices to really address student growth.”
These efforts reflect a broader shift across East Allegheny. Through strong leadership and staff, the district is building a reimagined educational experience centered on engagement, relationships, and meaningful opportunities for every student.
At the core of that work is a clear focus. “We have focused on student engagement and the student experience more than anything else,” DiLucente said. “That has allowed our relationships to be stronger and the community to re-bond to the school district.”
Shared Ideas, Stronger Schools

The national conference in Seattle included collaboration with educators from across the country and visits to schools with a wide range of challenges and innovative approaches.
“What was inspiring is that our context is not unique. We are not alone,” Long said. “We now have thought partners around the country that we can share ideas with and problem solve.”
That collaboration is expected to translate into opportunities for East Allegheny students. Through ongoing cohorts, partnerships, and site visits, the district will continue to bring back new ideas, from expanded career pathways to immersive, real-world learning experiences.
“This is not just a sit and get,” DiLucente said. “We go, we see, we interact, we debrief and collaborate, and then we implement.”
For families and the community, the message is clear. East Allegheny is not only part of a national conversation about the future of education. It is actively helping to shape it while continuing to build a stronger, more connected, and more engaging experience for students right here at home.
